I had a prospect that kept changing their mind- i don't know what i want... i'm not sure...what do other companies like me use? do i need that too? are you sure?
I finally sat them down and said "what is the real issue? is it money?" and they admitted they could not afford me. I asked for a realistic budget. they gave me one. I put together a model that fit within their numbers. We got together and they again said "we can't afford this!" and i said "you gave me this budget. this is the best option i can provide you within this budget . If this is really beyond your means, then maybe i'm not a fit for you" and we concluded the meeting.
... I got the order last night.

@anilorac in situations like this, I always think of the movie "Ruthless People" with Danny DeVito, Bette Midler and Judge Reinhold. There's a scene where Danny DeVito is in his office talking to a police officer about how to be a great salesman, and he says (i'm summarizing ) "a bad salesman will always drop the price". about five minutes later, Judge Reinhold calls to demand ransom to return Bette Midler. When Danny DeVito hear's the number, he scoffs and says "I'm not paying that. Keep her!" and Judge Reinhold immediately reduces the ransom
