It looks like sometime in the past few months things changed on how I can update contacts that I already have in my own contact list, but I do not own them in data.
Let's say I am friends with firstname.lastname@example.org and I have his direct dial. I go to Connect and click add to try to add John. Now let's assume that john is already in Connect. It USED to show the full contact info and if I had a direct dial that was in Connect, I could update and get points (and take ownership).
But now if I already know John, it won't tell me any info and I can't tell if connect has the direct dial. If I spent 5 points to buy, I can then see, but why should I if I already know john. Sure if connect has a bad phone I'll get my points back, but what if they don't? I lose out for no good reason.
Can we put back a way to make PHONE updates to someone I already know about without buying? I'll certainly not buy a contact I already own, so now the community will never know the phone number I know because I don't get any credit for updating. Shouldn't I "own" a contact if I have their name and email on my own?
Any way we can allow users to update phone without having to buy first? It used to do that if I knew the email.

@FancyAce93, I have noticed that bogusing of direct dial phone numbers has decreased expontentially. I sense this is because updating the phone is a major update requiring the contact be owned. It used to be that if you had a correct email address (or could guess it), you could view the contact card with direct dial without purchasing the contact. That loophole was removed awhile ago. In the interest of data quality, I dont think the change you desire will be implemented. I scrub every contact I purchase in Connect in LinkedIn. More often than not, the title has needs updating, and I rarely spend points anymore. I also scrub email addresses in a verifier to make sure the email address is valid, another way to recoup points.
