They know it's hard but they dont seem to emphasize with salespeople that it is that hard.

@LionoverLamb, I think you mean to say empathize.
The reason people who are not in sales don't empathize, is that they really don't know how difficult it is to be a true salesperson.
When most people think of sales, they think of store clerks or car salespeople. These are NOT salespeople. These are order takers. They are no different than the server who takes your order in a restaurant and then brings you your food and drinks. Sure, they have to try to upsell you on options or extras, but if you do not go to them, they cannot take your order.
Sales is not this at all.
OK, getting down off my soapbox now.

I completely agree with you. Most people who look down on salespeople think they can do what we do which is comical.
Very few people can go talk to stranger and have them open up and trust them. And like you said waitresses for example have clients come to them so they can upsell, same thing with retail clerks.
And telemarketers are mostly human robots not true salespeople

I remember when I used to do stand up comedy, people would actually admire my bravery and toughness and freely admit they couldn't do that and I was a failed low level open mic comic.
Conversely I do high end B2B sales now and yet people look down on that and think it's easy and they could do it but they make excuses like I like steady pay as the reason they don't pursue it.
