So I can save time?
So I can get to the real decisionmaker?
So I don't spend valuable time talking to the gatekeeper and going nowhere?

If you have a big list of targeted prospects like most cold callers do, then you work on SINLOA. Saftey In Numbers Law Of Averages. If it is in a particular industry segment they usually know eachother. Lie and get caught and you can get cooked real fast. Be upfront and if you have a good product and really believe it it...it will sell.
I still do business with clients who were prospects decades ago. Honesty IS the best policy.
My 2 cents.

Extremely rare... unless it's something like "I'm doing well, thanks" when actually I am stressing out or whatever. That's more of a white lie though right?
I avoid lying at all cost, less to remember that way.

ABSOLUTELY NEVER!!!!! The truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth.
Don't be afraid to admit that don't know something. BUT, know where to find the answer and follow up on it.
As for the gatekeeper issue, they are just doing thier job. Why not just say that you're trying to reach whoever it is and leave it at that? They might surprise you and give you the person's extension number or put you through. If not, look for another approach.
