I typically cold call Executives. Most of the time, if possible, the CFO. Some companies don't have one.
Sometimes when you call in and are asked to dial that person's name, it doesn't show up on their system. Therefore, what like to do is just dial in on anyone's extension, and when that person picks up I say " Oh I'm sorry, I wanted to speak to " Mr Jones CFO".
- That is when I asked for Mr. Jone's their direct dial so I have it for next time or ask them to connect me.

Also what works.... When a potential client/customer tells you to follow up in two weeks, two months, two years, DO IT. Mark it down on your calendar, calls sheet, whatever, just make that call when he says to call.
That is proven to work. You will be surprised how they remember. In this day and age, it's still good to know tried and true methods DO work....
